If you want to select the safest brands of CBD products then it is important to understand the processes through which CBD oil is extracted.

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of 85 different compounds that are found in hemp and cannabis. Only certain varieties of hemp are rich in CBD and those are the plants which are ideal for cultivation.

There are two main methods of extracting CBD oil from plants that ready to be harvested:

  1. Extraction via carbon dioxide (Supercritical CO2 Extraction), and
  2. Extraction via Ethanol Oil and Canola

Some extraction techniques are less safe or ineffective than others due to their use of harmful neurotoxic solvents, such as hexane and butane. These solvents leave dangerous residues that often compromise certain immune functions and the body’s natural healing abilities.

1. Supercritical CO2 Extraction

The safest and most efficient method of extracting CBD is through the method of Carbon Dioxide extraction. It is termed “supercritical” because the process involves cooling and compressing carbon dioxide under such extreme pressure that it becomes “supercritical” and is turns into liquid.

This method is also used in the extraction of common products like tea and coffee, and when applied to hemp produces a pale amber-coloured extract. The CBD oil that passes through this method of extraction results in a full spectrum of the plant’s cannabinoid compound. However, this method is also relatively expensive.

2. Ethanol Oil & Canola Extraction

The second method of extraction uses Ethanol Oil and Canola and is also considered very safe and more economical than Supercritical CO2 Extraction. Ethanol is commonly used in the production of many common products such as mouthwashes and perfumes. It is an excellent solvent, but has a few slight disadvantages. One such disadvantage is that it dissolves the plant’s natural Chlorophyll along with cannabinoids and essential oils. This results in a CBD oil that is slightly green in colour. However, a simple solution to this is to remove the green colouring with a filtering process and the Ethanol is still a highly effective method for extracting the full range of cannabinoids and essential oils within the hemp plant.
